Italy just hosted the second webinar in the Total Peace European project that went live on September 20th-21st.

The Peace Center “Annalena Tonelli” in Forlì leads the project that aims at commemorating the lives and actions of people who contributed to build a free, democratic and nonviolent European Union. Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Holland, Spain and Poland are the countries taking part in the project and the next date will be the event hosted by the Czech Republic on October 27th-28th.

The webinar by the Peace Center revolved around Alexander Langer, an italian politic, writer, pacifist, journalist and environmentalist: “I don’t want us only to remember [Langer] - said vice-president of Emilia-Romagna region Elly Schlein in her speech- he was an attentive thinker and had a kind of foresight. Much of his thinking and reasoning is still topical, perhaps now more than ever.”

The webinar, titled ‘The Alexander Langer Experience’ was divided in two days. On September 20th the topics discussed were mainly Langer’s life and his environmental effort. The event opened with the greetings of Rosaria Tassinari, city councilor of Forlì and delegate for peace and Human Rights. The vice-president of Emilia-Romagna, Elly Schlein, Federico Faloppa of the Alexander Stiftung Foundation and Marzio Marzorati of Legambiente Lombardia also gave speeches during the afternoon. Closing the event was Mao Valpiana, president of the Nonviolent Movement in Italy.

On the second day, International Peace Day, Raffaele Barbiero introduced the Civil Peace Corps project, followed by stories of those who actually took part in the project in the last few years. “These two days- say the organizers- serve as proof and synthesis that intellectuals can be thorns in the side of ‘power’ and build the Europe we wish for: we had over a hundred participants, both Italian and European, and that shows how important are the themes we discussed.”
